A new, highly mutated COVID-19 variant called BA.3.2, nicknamed “Cicada,” is spreading across the United States and has been detected in more than half of U.S. states as of early April 2026. First identified in South Africa in November 2024, the variant has gained global traction and is being closely monitored due to its large number of mutations, which may help it evade immunity from prior infections or vaccines. Health experts say its symptoms are generally similar to other COVID-19 variants and include typical respiratory and flu-like signs. The World Health Organization classified BA.3.2 as a “variant under monitoring” in December 2025, prompting ongoing surveillance by public health officials.
