Resilient Media for Democracy Observatory

A new report by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance reveals that the climate crisis is increasingly threatening democratic processes worldwide. Natural hazards such as floods, wildfires, and extreme heat disrupted 23 elections across 18 countries in 2024 alone. Over the past two decades, at least 94 elections and referendums have been negatively impacted by climate-related events. The research warns that fragile democratic systems, particularly in Africa and Asia, will face even greater pressures as global climate risks intensify.
