A new report finds that stricter EU migration controls have not reduced overall migration from Africa but instead redirected flows to alternative and often more dangerous routes. While the EU’s internal Asylum and Migration Pact and external funding deals temporarily lowered European arrivals by 26% in 2025, they have merely diverted irregular routes. These stricter deterrents frequently force migrants to undertake alternative, longer, and significantly more hazardous journeys to reach Europe. Analysts warn that these measures fail to tackle the underlying drivers of migration, such as prolonged conflicts, weak labor markets, climate shocks, and humanitarian aid cuts.
