Hundreds of Palestinians rallied across several cities in the occupied West Bank to protest Israel’s newly approved law allowing the death penalty for Palestinians convicted of deadly attacks, with demonstrations reported in places including Ramallah, Nablus, Jenin, Tubas and Hebron. The UN human rights chief Volker Türk condemned the legislation as “deeply discriminatory,” warning that applying the death penalty to residents of occupied territory could constitute a war crime. The protesters displayed images of Palestinian prisoners who have died in custody. Israel’s parliament (Knesset) passed the measure by a 62–48 vote, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voted in favour.
