New research analyzing global online news found coverage referencing misogynistic abuse terms fell to 1.3% of all global online news in 2025. The coverage on misogynistic abuse is at its lowest level since 2017, despite persistent violence against women and girls. The analysis also found that coverage of Epstein-related stories rarely used a “violence against women” framing, and the report argued that missing a gender-inequality lens obscures root causes and power dynamics. The report recommended shifting editorial practices, including centering survivors’ perspectives and strengthening expertise in reporting on gender-based violence. The report recommends improving reporting by putting women journalists and editors in charge of shaping coverage, centering survivors’ voices, and explain root causes such as gender inequality, power abuse, patriarchal norms, and misogynistic culture.
