The European Court of Justice ruled that Hungary’s 2021 anti‑LGBTQ+ law is discriminatory and violates the EU’s fundamental values, including equality, human rights, and freedom of expression. The law restricted the depiction of LGBTQ+ content in schools, media, and advertising, which the court found incompatible with a pluralistic democratic society. This marks the first time the court has found an EU member state in breach of EU law solely for violating the bloc’s core values under Article 2 of its treaty. The ruling puts pressure on Hungary’s incoming government to comply, potentially repeal the law, and restore EU relations, including access to frozen funds.
