A new UN report warns that the conflict in Iran could push four million people across the Arab region into poverty in just one month of warfare. The United Nations Development Programme estimates that Arab nations stand to lose up to $194 billion in GDP, primarily due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and massive disruptions to global energy supply chains. This devastating economic fallout is expected to severely impact vulnerable populations in both the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and the Levant. The conflict threatens to slash the gross domestic product of these regions by more than 5.2 percent. This economic shock is projected to cost 3.6 million jobs, with the Levant region expected to bear 75% of the total increase in poverty. In response to the maritime blockade, regional powers are exploring alternative overland routes and pipelines to maintain vital oil and gas exports.
