Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has instructed Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to pursue “fair and equitable negotiations” with the United States, signalling Tehran’s openness to talks despite escalating tensions. The move comes after military incidents in the region, including the US shooting down an Iranian drone and clashes in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as threats from former President Donald Trump amid Iran’s crackdown on protesters. Washington confirmed that its special envoy plans to hold discussions with Iranian officials in Turkey, with Ankara and several regional countries involved in facilitating dialogue.
